What to Do if You Are in a Motor Vehicle Accident

- Collect the policy numbers and names of the auto insurance companies for all drivers involved
- Note any injuries and any damage to the vehicles
- When the police arrives, note the names of the police officers or highway patrol officers that responded to the accident
- Ask for the incident number so that you can get a copy of the accident report (and so that you can give this information to your insurance company). Do not leave the scene of the accident until the police officers tell you that it is OK to do so.
If you are injured in an auto accident or if damage to the vehicles exceeds a certain amount you must file a police report. You must inform your insurance company and it is strongly advised to contact an car accident attorney to help you accomplish these things.
Contact an Attorney
When you consult with an attorney, bring all of your car insurance information with you. Do not sign any documents or checks from an insurance company before you speak with the lawyer. Document all of the costs related to the accident, such as renting a car, lost wages, medical bills and other costs. An experienced attorney can help you sort out the all the losses related to your accident.
